Aims and Organization: The Society has as its object 'the enlargement of the public knowledge of medieval English history by the publication of the Pipe Rolls and the associated records of medieval English government and of other manuscripts of national importance prior to the year 1350' (Society, Rule II, as amended at the AGM in June 2005). The Society's main officers (Chairman, General Editor, Secretary and Treasurer) are all unpaid. Small honoraria are paid to an under-treasurer and a stock manager. The Society is one of the nominated beneficiaries of the Stenton Fund administered by the British Academy to assist with the costs of its publications.
In the present year, no volume was published. The Society sponsored a public lecture, on 'The Wardrobe Accounts of King Henry III, 1216-1272', delivered by Dr Benjamin Wild. Substantial progress has been made with Professor Judith Green's edition and translation of the Pipe Roll 31 Henry I, which is due to appear in 2010. Thereafter, Dr Moss's second volume of Norman Pipe Rolls, covering the reign of Richard I, and Dr Barratt's edition of the Pipe Roll 9 Henry III should both appear within the short to medium term. To ensure that members do not go without a volume for 2009/10, Professor Vincent has prepared a volume of Norman Charters from English Archives, dealing with the circumstances in which Thomas Stapleton first came to edit the Norman Pipe Rolls, in the 1830s, and including the texts of some 100 previously unpublished Anglo-Norman charters preserved in English archives. This should be ready for distribution to members early in the New Year. Other volumes approaching publication include the Memoranda Rolls 2-7 Henry III, edited by Dr Paul Dryburgh Amongst new proposals, the Society has recently adopted the offer by Dr Hugh Doherty of a new edition of the Irish Pipe Roll 14 John, known only from a seventeenth-century transcript in Armagh. Members who are in arrears with their subscriptions are asked to bring them up to date in time for forthcoming volumes, and are reminded that gift-aid forms, and direct-debit forms can be obtained from the Treasurer or the Secretary. Members are reminded that all are welcome to attend the Society's Annual General Meeting which will be held next year at the National Archives, Kew, on Tuesday 28 June 2011 at 3.30pm.
If members would like a copy of the annual audited accounts, they can be obtained by sending an email to piperollsociety@ntlworld.com
